E-Readers  (Canada)
Hey All,

I've been doing some searching around, comparing e-readers and tablets and was wondering if any one was interested in starting a thread here regarding that kind of thing.

Re: E-Readers  (United States)
Hi,

Wikipedia has a number of pages dedicated to this sort of thing; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_readers

I personally have the pocketbook 301+.  I've had it for over a year now and love it.  At the time I got it, it had the fastest refresh rate of any of the e-ink displays on the market, which was a huge draw.  It supports many formats, with some hope of adding more support.  It's pretty much a barebones ereader.  it does one thing well.  There is no wifi or touchscreen or any of that.  The battery last a good long time, I often go weeks with out charging it, occasionally months if school has been particularly busy (no time for pleasure reading).

I've been interested in tablets as reading devices but get turned off by the price and the fact that I don't much care for extended reading on light emitting displays.  Truth be told, i don't know nearly enough about tablets and their battery life, displays, support, to offer an opinion here.  If anyone with some experience could chime in?

peace

Re: E-Readers  (United States)
I purchased the Sony Touch eReader about 6 months ago and have been very pleased with it's performance. It is a non-lit LCD display which is easy on the eyes and the optional case with reading lamp brings the whole package in around 225 dollars. It has 512 meg of storage and (this was the reason I did not go with the less expensive unit) can accept SSD and SonyDuo memory cards for additional storage. The big selling point was the fact that the reader can handle a wide selection of formats including PDFs and Word documents instead of the usual reliance on proprietary file formats.
At present I am running my unit with a 2 gig SSD and it contains about 1230 books/documents including PDFs of most of my professional references. The only downside I have experienced is a wait of 5-10 minutes when I take the unit off the interface cable or bring it up from a full shutdown while it organizes and updates it's filing system. I manage to get about a week of use out of the unit before I need to recharge (the paperwork claims a 2 week cycle but I chalk that up to me being an avid reader).

Re: E-Readers  (Canada)
All,

Well we have a Samsung Galaxy S on the way to replace my old Motorola StarTac which was great back in the early 2000's.  Will let you know how Freeway looks on it, and which App is better for it, when I find out.  And if it is good, I might just shell out for an unlocked Galaxy Tab....  I've always wanted to be able to watch Bugs, Daffy and Elmer do "ProNoun Trouble" on the bus and laff out loud and share it with complete strangers...  Ahh, the simple things in life.

Hairy Fishnuts to all, and to all a good Fright.

P.S. nothing to do with this thread, but thank goodness that Oddworld FINALLY ported Munch and Stranger to PC.....  I've been waiting and hoping and praying for years, and now it has happened!  Thank Odd!

Re: E-Readers  (United States)
I've been doing my reading lately on my Nexus S, which is a close cousin of the Galaxy S. Just read "Iron Dawn" on it, purchased from this very website. For the Android platform I really like Cool Reader for viewing ePubs, as it is very single focus, letting you do your file management with whatever other app(s) you choose (I put all my books in my Dropbox account so that I can access them from anywhere). Aldiko is another decent ePub reader, although it wants to take over management of your book files.

Looking forward to the 10" Galaxy Tab coming later this year. That looks like it'll be a good device for reading.
